What Choghadiya is
Choghadiya (चौघड़िया) is a Vedic day-divination system: each day (sunrise to sunset) is divided into 8 unequal parts, each part tied to a planetary ruler. The 8 parts are called Choghadiya 1 through Choghadiya 8, and each has a name (Udveg, Chal, Labh, Amrit, Kaal, Shubh, Rog, Kaal in some order based on weekday) and a quality (auspicious, average, inauspicious) tied to the planet. The 8 Choghadiya classes
The 8 Choghadiya classes (with their planetary ruler and quality) are: (1) Char (good for work/study), ruled by Sun; (2) Chal (good for travel, fast-moving work), ruled by Venus; (3) Labh (gain, profit), ruled by Mercury; (4) Amrit (auspicious, sweet), ruled by Moon; (5) Kaal (inauspicious, death-like), ruled by Saturn; (6) Shubh (good), ruled by Jupiter; (7) Rog (illness), ruled by Mars; (8) Udveg (anxiety), ruled by Rahu.
Night Choghadiya (Raatri Choghadiya)
After sunset, the same 8-part logic continues with 'night Choghadiya', but with a different set of 7 named rulers (because the night sky is different from the day sky in classical Jyotish symbolism). The 8 night Choghadiya classes are Charan, Rog, Kaal, Labh, Udveg, Amrit, Shubh, Char—the same 8 categories, plus a special inclusion of 'deep night' Rahu-class. The order rotates per weekday: Monday starts with Sun, Tuesday with Moon, etc.
When to use Choghadiya and when not to
Choghadiya is best for short-event timing (a few hours out, e.g., booking an appointment, scheduling travel, picking a wedding muhurat within a given day). Choghadiya is NOT for multi-day planning (use tithi + nakshatra instead) and NOT for major life-event selection (use nakshatra + yoga + karana + day-lord instead).
