For long trips (over 100 km), also consider the weekday-lord: Monday (Moon) for family travel; Tuesday (Mars) for fast adventure; Wednesday (Mercury) for trade-related; Thursday (Jupiter) for educational; Friday (Venus) for family-fun; Saturday (Saturn) for labour-related; Sunday (Sun) for state-functions. Avoid Rahu Kaal absolutely.
Which weekday to start long-distance travel
Classical rules vary by sect, but a common combination is: (1) start in a Char or Amrit Choghadiya; (2) NOT in Rahu Kaal; (3) preferred weekdays Monday/Wednesday/Thursday; (4) preferred nakshatra: Rohini, Mrigashira, Pushya, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, Revati. Air travel vs road travel
Air travel follows the same rules as road travel—the panchang doesn't change because you're in the air. Maritime travel (long ship voyages, especially international) has a different classical treatment: it's safer to leave port during a Monday hora of the Moon, or a Wednesday hora of Mercury. The textual basis is the Brihat Samhita chapter on maritime travel, which is more complex than terrestrial muhurat.
